I think there’s another more practical reason why discs aren’t dead. I rarely play music through my optical players (CD, DVD, etc.) anymore. The majority of the time I play music from my computer or through my turntable. But if I want digital music, I really have no option but to buy physical CDs because the selection of lossless downloadable music is still pitiful, especially if you live outside the United States. Yes, it’s improving, but very slowly. I would happily buy lossless downloads exclusively if I could, just to avoid having to store all the discs, but if I did, I would be restricting my music choices significantly. So the bottom line is that I will continue to buy CDs and their ilk for a long time to come.
